Postdoctoral Researcher or Engineer (all genders) Heavy-Ion Beam Irradiation Platform for Fusion Materials Posting ID: 26.37-1600
GSI Helmholtzzentrum für Schwerionenforschung in Darmstadt operates one of the leading particle accelerators for science. Currently, the new FAIR (Facility for Antiproton and Ion Research) one of the world's largest research projects, will be built in international cooperation. GSI and FAIR offer the opportunity to work in this international environment with a team of employees committed to ensuring each day to conduct world-class science.
The Materials Science (MAT) Group at GSI seeks an outstanding candidate for a three-year postdoctoral or engineering position with qualifications in mechanical engineering, physics, materials science, or related fields. Tasks will focus on the design, construction, and commissioning of a heavy-ion beam irradiation chamber. The candidate will work in a multidisciplinary environment, collaborating closely with accelerator, vacuum, and instrumentation experts to develop a state-of-the-art platform for material irradiation studies under well-controlled conditions for fusion applications.
Postdoctoral Researcher or Engineer (all genders)
Heavy-Ion Beam Irradiation Platform for Fusion Materials
Posting ID: 26.37-1600
Aufgaben
- Design, procure, and coordinate the assembly of a heavy-ion beam irradiation chamber and its subsystems, including vacuum with load-lock sample handling, translation stages, active cooling and heating, and beam diagnostic components
- Perform pre-commissioning and testing of the chamber as a standalone system before integration with an accelerator beamline
- Contribute to documentation, safety analyses, and operational procedures for the chamber
- Interface and collaborate with multiple technical groups at GSI, particularly the LINAC department, to ensure smooth integration with existing beamline infrastructure.
Profil
- PhD or equivalent experience in Mechanical Engineering, Physics, Materials Science, or a related discipline
- Strong hands-on experience in designing, building, and assembling complex mechanical and vacuum systems, including hardware interlocks
- Ability to work independently and collaboratively in multidisciplinary teams, including engineers, scientists, and technical staff.
Knowledge is expected in the following areas:
- Mechanical design of vacuum chambers and custom solutions for UHV-compatible components, such as high-temperature sample holders and translation stages
- Instrumentation and diagnostics for monitoring physical parameters (pressure, temperature, position, etc.)
- Project management skills for procurement, assembly, and pre-commissioning of complex integrated mechanical setups.
Wir bieten
The contract is limited until 31.01.2029. The salary is based on the collective agreement for public employees (TVöD).
GSI supports the vocational development of women. Therefore, women are especially encouraged to apply for the position.
