The Faculty of Sports Science at the Ruhr-Universität Bochum invites applications for the position of a Professor open rank: W1-Tenure-Track-W3, W2-Tenure-Track-W3 or W3 (m/f/d) in Sports and Exercise Medicine commencing 1. April 2027.
The holder of the position will represent the subject of

Sports and Exercise Medicine

in research and teaching.

Aufgaben

The Faculty of Sport Science aims to establish a research focus in Muscle and Metabolic Health and Performance. The Professorship of Sports and Exercise Medicine will make a significant contribution to this focus by their research in Muscle and Metabolic Health and further areas. Proven scientific contributions in at least two of the following areas are desirable:

  • Basic research on skeletal muscle physiology and pathophysiology;
  • Basic research on muscular adaptations of skeletal muscles to training in healthy and diseased people;
  • Research into muscular overload syndromes and muscle injuries;
  • Sports medicine diagnostics of physical performance in healthy and diseased people.

In teaching, the subject area of Sports and Exercise Medicine is to be represented and further developed in its entire breadth in both the bachelor's and master's degree programmes of the Faculty of Sport Science. Courses and examinations must be held in German and English.


Profil

Applicants are expected to have demonstrated outstanding achievements in research and teaching in the field of Sports and Exercise Medicine that are internationally recognised.

An excellent scientific qualification is required, usually proven by a PhD of outstanding quality. Evidence of special suitability for academic teaching is just as much required as the willingness to participate in the self-governing bodies of the Ruhr-Universität Bochum and to generally get involved in university processes according to Ruhr-Universität Bochum's mission statement. The candidate has to meet the appointment requirements according to section 36 ff. Hochschulgesetz NW. The following applies to W2-Tenure-Track-W3 and W3: Positive evaluation as a junior professor, habilitation or equivalent academic achievement.
We expect furthermore:

  • Strong commitment in teaching;
  • Willingness to engage in interdisciplinary scientific work;
  • The willingness (W1) and proven ability (W2) to acquire competitive (W3 — significant), thirdparty funded research projects (e.g., national funding agencies, EU) is expected;
  • High-quality scientific publications in international journals and international research experience in the field of Sports and Exercise Medicine, depending on the stage of your career;
  • Willingness to engage in interdisciplinary scientific work, in particular collaboration with the disciplines represented in the Faculty of Sport Science and the corresponding subjects in other Faculties at Ruhr-Universität Bochum (e.g., Medicine, Biology, or Neuroscience), as well as collaboration within the framework of the University Alliance Ruhr;
  • The fit of the qualification profile with the overall mission of the Faculty of Sport Science is a further selection criterion;
  • Ideally, a license to practice medicine (approbation) with the additional qualification of Sports medicine or proof of having worked in sports medicine;
  • Ideally, experience conducting Sports medicine examinations.

Wir bieten

The position will be filled with an option of tenure track for the professorship to W3. If the evaluation is positive, the professorship will be in an appropriately simplified procedure without a new announcement.
